What to Do

Marienplatz

Since 1158, Marienplatz, also known as “Mary’s Square,” has been the bustling heart of Munich. Today, it remains a focal point of the city, dominated by the impressive New City Hall (Neues Rathaus) on its northern side. The highlight of Marienplatz is undoubtedly the iconic Glockenspiel housed within the tower of the New City Hall.

The Glockenspiel, a beloved attraction, features an elaborate musical clock that delights spectators with performances twice daily at 11AM and 12PM (and an additional show at 5PM during the summer months). This intricate spectacle re-enacts two stories from the 16th century, accompanied by the melodious chimes of its forty-three bells. Comprising thirty-two life-sized figures, the performance lasts approximately twelve to fifteen minutes, captivating millions of tourists who flock to the square each year.

Beyond the Glockenspiel, Marienplatz boasts a vibrant atmosphere with an array of restaurants and shops lining its vicinity. Visitors can immerse themselves in Munich’s rich culture, indulge in local cuisine, and explore the charming streets surrounding this historic square.

Englischer Garten

The “English Garden” is one of the world’s largest urban public parks and is so named on account of its “informal landscape” a style popular in England from the mid-18th century to the early 19th. The sprawling open spaces, wooded paths, monuments, and beer garden are all lovely, but what most appealed to Zee and I was the surfing. Owing to the unique flow of the water in the artificial streams, standing waves exist in a couple of places. It’s great fun watching the wetsuit clad surfers take their turns. But don’t take my word for it. Check out the Munich Highlight on our Instagram account.

Frauenkirche

Munich’s Cathedral of Our Dear Lady, affectionately known as Frauenkirche, serves as an emblem of the city’s rich heritage and cultural legacy. As the principal church of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, it holds both religious and historical significance, drawing visitors from far and wide.

What sets Frauenkirche apart is its distinctive architecture and commanding presence in Munich’s skyline. Despite local height regulations on new constructions, the cathedral’s twin towers soar majestically above the city, offering a breathtaking sight visible from nearly every vantage point. This iconic feature makes Frauenkirche an instantly recognizable landmark, contributing to Munich’s picturesque landscape.

Whether admired from afar or explored up close, Frauenkirche captivates with its Gothic design and centuries-old allure. Visitors flock to marvel at its grandeur and immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of history woven into its walls.

Munich Residenz

The Residence in central Munich stands as a magnificent testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Bavaria and Germany. Once the residence of the illustrious Wittelsbach monarchs, this grand palace served as the epicenter of power and sophistication for centuries.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Residence is its architectural splendor, reflecting the diverse tastes and styles of the various Wittelsbach rulers who inhabited it over the ages. The palace complex seamlessly blends Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical elements, resulting in a visually captivating ensemble that captivates visitors.

Venturing inside the Residence unveils a treasure trove of over 130 rooms, each more splendid than the last. Highlights include the Antiquarium, an expansive hall adorned with ancient Roman and Greek sculptures, the regal Throne Room, where grand ceremonies and receptions took place, and the exquisite Cuvilliés Theatre, a masterpiece of Rococo design that hosted renowned operas, plays, and ballets.

The Residence in Munich stands as a testament to the opulence and cultural legacy of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Whether you’re drawn to history, art, or architecture, a visit to this extraordinary palace promises an unforgettable experience that immerses you in the grandeur of Bavarian royalty.

Neuschwanstein

Thanks to the Autobahn, Christoph’s home in central Munich was just a quick ninety-minute drive away from Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th-century palace nestled on a rugged hill southwest of Munich. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a personal retreat and homage to composer Richard Wagner, this distinctive fairy-tale palace captivates visitors with its enchanting allure.

It’s evident that this architectural marvel served as the inspiration for Disney’s iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle, with its picturesque turrets and romantic setting. Zee and I were enthralled as we explored the scenic woods surrounding the castle, taking in the breathtaking views and even capturing aerial footage with our drone.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a glimpse into Bavaria’s rich history and royal legacy. Its proximity to Munich makes it an easily accessible day trip, offering an unforgettable experience that transports visitors to a world of fairy tales and fantasy.

The artwork’s allure lies in its ability to captivate the imagination of viewers, drawing them in with its mesmerizing design and thought-provoking concept. Its popularity extends to a diverse range of admirers, including art students seeking inspiration, photographers capturing its beauty, and social media users sharing its splendor on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Olympiapark Munich

Originally designed for the 1972 Summer Olympics, this park remains a beloved venue for events and leisure activities to this day. Zee and I savored a delightful stroll around the park and its picturesque pond, soaking in the serene ambiance and natural beauty.

One of the park’s most iconic features is the Olympic Tower, also known as Olympiaturm, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. From atop this towering structure, visitors can admire the sprawling vistas of Munich and beyond, making it a must-visit attraction for tourists and locals alike.

Exploring this historic and vibrant location was a truly memorable experience for us. Whether you’re drawn to its Olympic legacy, scenic surroundings, or architectural landmarks, this park offers something for everyone to enjoy.

Where to Dine

Die Goldene Bar

Located a short distance from the English Garden surfers and housed within the Haus der Kunst (an art museum hosting exhibitions), the Die Goldene Bar is a charming site for lunch, cocktails, and beer; which is precisely what Zee and I enjoyed along with Christoph’s lovely wife, Karina.

The Chinese Tower

A surprising sight amidst the English Garden is the towering Chinese pagoda, a true gem hidden within Munich’s green oasis. Originally constructed in the late 1780s, this iconic structure faced destruction during WWII bombings but was meticulously restored and reopened to the public in 1952.

Today, the Chinese pagoda stands as a popular destination within the park, serving as the site of a charming restaurant and beer garden. Visitors can savor delightful meals and refreshing beverages amidst the tranquil surroundings, making it an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy the company of friends.

Christoph, Zee, and I thoroughly relished our experience at the restaurant and beer garden, immersing ourselves in the serene ambiance and indulging in delicious cuisine. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of this historic landmark, which continues to captivate visitors with its cultural significance and scenic beauty.

Pizzeria San Marco da Giovanni

A surprisingly short distance from Neuschwanstein Castle is where you’ll find this cozy spot for pizza and beer. Bitte.

An Nam

Not far from the Marienplatz is this family-run Vietnamese restaurant with more than twenty-five years of experience. Zee and I enjoyed this spot along with Christoph and his family. Cam o’n.

Frau Bartels

A favorite spot of Christoph’s, this modern and minimalist bar is a haven for craft beer enthusiasts and gin cocktail aficionados alike. Nestled in the heart of Munich, this local haunt exudes contemporary charm and sophistication, offering an array of meticulously crafted libations to tantalize the taste buds.

Step into the sleek and stylish ambiance of this bar, where clean lines and understated decor create a welcoming atmosphere for patrons to unwind and socialize. From hoppy IPAs to smooth gin concoctions, the bar boasts a diverse selection of beverages to suit every palate.

Whether you’re seeking a refreshing pint of locally brewed beer or a creative gin cocktail infused with botanical flavors, this establishment delivers an unforgettable drinking experience. Join Christoph at his beloved haunt and immerse yourself in the vibrant nightlife scene of Munich.
