Doha, and Qatar as a whole, captured global attention by hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. We found the city to be a more intimate counterpart to Dubai and despite the reduced traffic and improved accessibility, Doha never felt lacking in culture or charm. During our visit, the warmth of local friendships further enriched our experience, as life-long residents enthusiastically shared their love for the city they call home.

The modern capital, Doha stands as one of the leading cities along the Persian Gulf. Boasting rapid growth this metropolis hosts over 80% of the nation’s population. Notably, Qatar only gained independence from British protectorate status in 1971.

Just the Facts

  • Typical January Weather: A high of 72°F is normal, even during January, when the low can dip to 58°F.
  • Airport: Hamad International Airport is a large, modern airport hosting a wide-range of international carriers, including United Airlines, which we flew from London. Having arrived early, we spent a little time in the lovely Al Maha Lounge, which offered up award-winning service. Even when we aren’t flying business class, due to Zee being a valuable card holder of Capital One Venture X credit card, it offers Priority Pass as a free service to Zee and her guests.

Getting Around

  • Car: We opted to use Uber for all our transportation needs, and the service surpassed our expectations compared to what we’re accustomed to in the United States. The arrival of cars was remarkably prompt, and the entire experience unfolded seamlessly each time. Should you decide to rent a car, there are many options at the Doha Airport, and you can save by choosing to book via Rentalcars.com.

Souq Waqif

“The standing market” sells traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It is also home to restaurants and shisha lounges. The original building dates back to the late 19th to early 20th centuries in a traditional Qatari architectural style. Personally, we fell in love with the falcons, horses and camels all found here. It’s worth mentioning that there’s even a Falcon Hospital onsite.

Villagio Mall

Villaggio is a bustling destination drawing an average of 50,000 daily visitors and has established itself as a premier shopping haven. The Venetian-styled interiors add to its allure, creating a captivating ambiance that, combined with an array of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues, makes Villaggio a unique and unforgettable attraction.

Place Vendome Mall

Place Vendôme includes two luxury hotels and a mall with 560 retail outlets. Inspired by Rue de la Paix in Paris, it radiates luxury with a touch of cultural and artistic ambiance. The canal running through it adds to the appeal, creating a beautiful plaza with waterfront cafés.

Where to Dine

Sailors Lounge

Warm, elegant, and stunning surroundings create a secluded haven for guests of The St. Regis. This space is designed to be a gathering point where the finest cigar selection, paired with the highest quality beverages, promises to immerse you in a memorable and soothing evening.

Pool Bar

The Pool Bar presents a chic atmosphere suitable for any occasion, whether it’s a romantic setting with your significant other or a casual catch-up with friends and family. We had fun frolicking in the pool.

Al Mandaloun Waterfront

Al Mandaloun Waterfront Doha is a Lebanese restaurant concept that exudes an uplifting and welcoming ambiance. Located on the grounds of the St. Regis it brings an international twist to Eastern Mediterranean cuisine, featuring a salad bar, daily specials, breakfast options, live entertainment, and much more. Their hummus and unique fattoush salad are to die for.

Babel

Located at The St. Regis, this luxurious Lebanese restaurant affords delicious dishes and breathtaking views of the waterfront.

Ahwet Zeitouna

Ahwet Zeitouna is a laid-back Lebanese café, inviting guests to savor their shisha and relish tapas in an exceptional and relaxed setting. Embodying the genuine spirit of a Lebanese neighborhood café, it offers a simple and chill atmosphere. We enjoyed it so much that we dined here, twice. It didn’t hurt that it was also on the grounds of The St. Regis.

Vaya! Latin Mercado

Embark on a culinary journey with Vaya! at Fairmont Doha, where the dynamic and alluring flavors of South America come to life, offering an extraordinary dining experience and a captivating gastronomic exploration of the New World. Indulge in a selection of delectable seafood delicacies or savor succulent steaks, freshly grilled on the authentic Argentinian barbecue. Elevating the experience further, their signature Friday brunch is a festive celebration of South American street food right here in Doha. Immerse yourself in the vibrancy and richness of these culinary traditions at Vaya!

It was here that Zee and I enjoyed both lunch and celebrated New Year’s Eve at a festive masquerade ball. Brunch, the following morning, was also a real treat.

Chabrat Al Mina Doha

Situated next to the seafood market in the vibrant Mina District, this restaurant offers up only the freshest seafood. Adding a unique touch, each table is adorned with a bowl of lettuce, carrots, and cucumbers, as if inviting guests to concoct their own salad.

Chac’late Doha Qatadoha

Chac’Late, the European-themed chocolatier, is playfully named in a way phonetically reminiscent of how a local child would pronounce the delectable treat. Chac’Late brings the epitome of sweetness to Qatar, infusing European charm with a local touch. The menu showcases premier chocolate brands from the UK, Italy, and Switzerland, complemented by authentic homemade Arabic flavors like karak and tahina. Zee’s hot chocolate was all she’d hoped it would be.

Zengo Doha

Zee and I fondly recall the Zengo that existed for a time in Santa Monica, California. It has since left our hometown but the Doha location exceeded our expectations. Perched on the 61st floor of the Kempinski Residences & Suites in West Bay, Zengo boasts a vibrant décor that blends modern Asian elements with inventive design, creating an ideal atmosphere to relish its diverse cuisine and adventurous flavors.

The menu offers a delightful array, ranging from sushi, sashimi, and curry dishes to grilled entrees and wok creations. Hand-muddled mocktails, featuring Asian flavors, perfectly complement the diverse menu. Zengo distinguishes itself not only through its marvelous flavors but also with artfully presented dishes and original beverage creations, making it a standout culinary experience.

In Summary

Doha offers an abundance of experiences, making it well worth a repeat visit. Though we didn’t have the opportunity on this trip to visit these location we learned that beyond the capital city, Qatar unveils hidden gems like Khor Al Udeid (Inland Sea), where rolling dunes and the roar of engines create an exhilarating atmosphere. Racing up and down endless sand dunes is a favorite pastime for both tourists and locals and is often facilitated by tourism companies offering guided tours with traditional Arab meals and campfires.

Another must-visit (or so we were told) is Zubarah, housing the ruins of a deserted city and a fort built in 1938 by Sheikh ‘Abdu’llah bin Qasim Al-Thani. Additionally, Zubarah is the planned site for the Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Bridge, promising a road connection between North-West Qatar and Bahrain.

Zee and I eagerly anticipate our return visit to Qatar. Inshallah.
